Skinny Water Bass
After a lengthy preparation, I was frustrated after having no luck exploring a new creek the previous day, so I was keen to hit some old relatively untouched water to make up for it. Strangely there was an earthquake that coincided with that previous mission, so I assume that’s why the fish weren’t biting.
The alarm was set and with no such natural events registered; we got on the road well before sunrise. When we arrived at the river the water looked great, nice and clear! The kayaks were rigged up and we set off as the sun was breaking through the trees. It all started quite slow and there were no signs of activity, so fearing the worst on the surface fly, I changed over to the baitcaster and tied on a deeper presentation, a TT Lures Jigspinner and 4” StreakZ Curly TailZ.
"The G2H5 really have great penetration through the water and are excellent in tight shady rivers where the rose lens base allows just the right amount of light through so that you don’t feel like you are losing any detail in the shade."
I thought we were in for another unsuccessful session until I threw the lure up along one big snag pile in the middle of the creek and begun steady slow wind and bang! A bass smashed the offering and the fight was on. In these tight situations, bass often have the upper hand but after a challenging fight I managed to extract the bass from his timber home and had him beside the kayak. I quickly released the fish and put another cast back into the same spot. Again another bass smashed the lure and attempted to make its way back into the snag pile. This session was all of a sudden becoming very productive! 6 fish in fact were caught off the one snag pile in the middle of the creek.
As I was letting one bass go I looked up and saw another bass sitting on the surface right in front of me thanks to the G2H5 lens I was wearing. They really have great penetration through the water and are excellent in tight shady rivers where the rose lens base allows just the right amount of light through so that you don’t feel like you are losing any detail in the shade.
I put a cast next to it and it charged the lure right next to the kayak. These craft are excellent for stealthy fishing missions such as this and I would have to say this was the best Bass session I had experienced in a very long time! Nothing beats paddling a kayak up a skinny water creek and dragging it through the jungle to get into the next water hole. The wildlife you see while out there is yet another reason why I love a good Skinny Water Adventure!
